WANT: the 2010 if stockholm open mag cover

October 22, 2010

Posterity’s sake: Do we have readers at this week’s If Stockholm Open? If (hyuk!) so, can we talk shop for a sec? We’re trying to track down a copy of this year’s magazine; if it’s anything like the one with Delpo on the cover, it should be worth a gander. Scan and email, please?

Semis: The semis are now set, with Roger Federer facing off against Ivan Ljubicic and Florian Mayer — who upset second seed Robin Soderling — facing Jarkko Nieminen. More info at the tourney site. FYI, Roger played his landmark 900th match in the second round, beating Dent. He’s currently the only active player over 900. See more deets about the record here.

October 8, 2010

We’re hoping that this year’s cover of the If Stockholm Open magazine will be as sizzlin’ as it was when Delpo was on the cover.

More info: If Stockholm Open, October 16-24, 2010. Tourney site; ATP tourney site.

nono bags first win since the french

October 20, 2009

Munchkin Watch: Two snaps for Arnaud Clement for snapping a six-match losing streak that dated all the way back to this year’s French Open. Now he’s into the second round of the IF Stockholm Open after defeating fifth-seed Andreas Beck 6-4, 6-2 — this, after successfully getting through qualifying and earning a spot in the main draw.

Buy: Clement’s wearing the Short Sleeve Solid Super Dry Lacoste polo in black. Check out all the colors (starting at $51.99) at lacoste.com.

the cutest barbed wire i have ever seen

October 19, 2009

The folks at Athletic DNA have given Aussie Peter Luczak a patriotic version of their Warrior tee (yes, we quiver in the face of all that barbed wire!). Unfortunately, this tough exterior was no match for the fresh Joachim Johansson, backed by his hometown crowd in their first-round battle at this week’s IF Stockholm Open.

Buy: Athletic DNA warrior tee, in white/grey, $49.95 at athleticdna.com.

pimpim primps: joachim’s new look at stockholm

October 19, 2009

No more Yawn-ex: It seems that Swede Joachim Johansson has switched from Yonex to the much more prim-and-proper Fred Perry.

He’s competing in this week’s IF Stockholm Open as a wildcard — only his second tourney of 2009 — and has won his first round match against Peter Luczak 7-5, 6-2. He next faces Juan Monaco.

Bits: The event’s top three seeds are Soderling, Haas, and Ferrero. See the draw here.

oh, mirka! how soon will wedding bells ring?

October 7, 2008

Perhaps the recent wedding attended by Roger Federer and Mirka Vavrinec — that of Roger’s childhood friend Reto Staubli in Mallorca — are getting tennis’ first (second?) couple thinking about walking down the aisle?

After a seesaw 2008 that started with mono and bookended by a fifth U.S. Open title, the world No. 2 has withdrawn from this week’s ATP tour stop in Stockholm.

“In order to [remain at the top of the game], I need to get a proper rest and get strong again so that I am 100% fit for the remainder of the year or next year,” he told the press. “At this point, I am not sure when I will be ready to play again, but I hope to be back at some point before the end of the year.”

With Rafa Nadal also declining to play, this leaves the tourney with seventh-ranked David Nalbandian as the top seed.

So now that Roger’s scaling back tennis, he’s back in Dubai browsing jewelry with Mirka at the Atlantis resort in the Palm Jumeirah. Items considered: a 60-carat D Flawless diamond ring and a more modest 15-carat pink cushion-cut.

I can’t wait to see what they end up with…

trophies: vienna, moscow, bangkok, stockholm

October 14, 2007

novak djokovic - ba-ca trophy, vienna

World No. 3 (and goateed) Novak Djokovic racked up his fifth title this year at the BA-CA Tennis Trophy in Vienna by beating Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka 6-4, 6-0. Not bad for his first tourney since getting to the finals of this year’s U.S. Open.

nikolay davydenko - kremlin cup

And not too far away, Nikolay Davydenko was mashing with his Kremlin Cup trophy after beating Paul-Henri Mathieu. This is the Russian’s first title of the year.

Women’s Kremlin Cup, Bangkok, and Stockholm after the cut…
