sightings in the stands: mathieu vs. youzhny, wimby 2nd round

June 25, 2010

Layman’s Runway: We love the makeshift hat of this fan watching Paul-Henri Mathieu upset 13th seed Mikhail Youzhny in the second round of Wimbledon. The score: 6-4, 2-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

This is only Mathieu’s first time past the first round since his 2010 season opener (at Indian Wells). He next faces Thiemo De Bakker, who had a cakewalk of a match against John Isner. The American, who was embroiled in that three-day first-round match that lasted just over 11 hours, could only muster winning five games before bowing out in 74 minutes. (Draw: Men’s Bottom Half)

halle says ‘hi’ from miami

May 31, 2010

Far, far away from Paris Halle Berry sported some Swiss sportswear on the beaches of Miami over the holiday weekend. Berry looked to be hanging with friends, unaware that the French Open was going on and that she missed the Sony Ericsson Open by a good two months.

Berry was wearing a HI-PRO cap, a Swiss company owned by our good friend Ivo Heuberger. The folks at HI-PRO also outfit the Swiss Davis Cup team, just in case you were wondering.

More Halle: Lots of pictures up on Just Jared.

fashion focus: it’s in the details

March 22, 2008

Now that there are only seven folks left standing in Indian Wells (both men’s semis still to be contested, plus one semi between Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic, the winner whom will face Sveta Kuznetsova in the finals), it’s time to look back at some fun fashion from the tournament.

Dmitry Tursunov - Indian Wells 2008

ATP vlogger Dmitry Tursunov wore this textured white Fila cap during his match against Juan Ignacio Chela.

Donald Young - Indian Wells 2008

I saw the bracelets on Donald Young up close during a hitting session last weekend, and I’m glad there was a photographer who picked it up. Here he is in a match against Rafael Nadal.

Galina Voskoboeva - Indian Wells 2008

Galina Voskoboeva fell to Vera Zvonareva in the third round, but not before taking out 22nd seed Michaella Krajicek in the round prior. Nice smiley face dampener, and look at the floral pattern on that hem!

k-swiss makes tommy haas a bamboo shirt

March 4, 2008

tommy-haas-dubai-spr08.jpg

It seems that K-Swiss and Limited Sports get to share the hunky walking billboard that is Tommy Haas.

The German company’s monogrammed hat and wristbands are hanging around (we thought they were lost forever!) while K-Swiss outfits Tommy with the Bamboo Side Print Crew. Yep, it’s a shirt that’s 66% bamboo. Apparently, the plant’s fibers have good moisture-wicking and antibacterial qualities.

Scoreline: Haas lost to David Ferrer 6-3, 6-0 in the first round of the Dubai tournament.

Buy: K-Swiss Bamboo Shirt, $36.99.

fashion hit: spadea sparkles

September 26, 2007

As much as we rag on Vince Spadea for his prosti-totes, bedazzled trucker hats, or wearing basketball shorts on the court, we have to give credit where it’s due.

See how well this eccentric American cleans up? It’s like an episode of Extreme Makeover all up in hurrrr. Here he is playing a first round match at the Thailand Open (losing to Tommy Haas 6-4, 4-6, 1-6 in the first round). Put a non-obnoxious shirt on him (from his own line, of course) and he looks great. That hair is another story…

But we should enjoy this while it lasts. Back in May, Bethanie Mattek had the crazy notion that she’d tone down her on-court fashion style. It got her a title, but it didn’t last long. She was back to her old ways by the 2007 U.S. Open.

Buy?: You can check out some of Vince’s goods at his Pro Shop.

andy roddick’s hat, masha’s latest nike dress, marc jacobs at colette

August 4, 2007

Andy’s Lacoste hat: Number one American (and fast food grubber) Andy Roddick has his fans hunting all over the country for his Lacoste hat and other gear. A gaggle of them at Talk Tennis figured out that a shipment of the AR collection will hit stores this month. (Tip: If you can’t find it on the Lacoste website, call a store. It’s surprisingly hassle-free to get items shipped to you.)

Keeping it simple: The seesaw year of Maria Sharapova continues at the Acura Classic, where she appeared under the lights in a simple black and white Nike outfit. The layers in the upper back were secured at the neck; it wasn’t flapping in the wind like her Wimbledon dress. (Racqonteur loved it, too.) And someone needs to tell Tatiana that orange doesn’t look good on her.

Bonus round: It made me so happy to finally see the August ’07 Harper’s Bazaar, which features the Simpsonization of major labels like Viktor & Rolf, Chanel, Lanvin, Jean-Paul Gaultier, and Louis Vuitton. They showed off the prints at Colette and the designers posed next to their cartoon: that’s Hottie McHotterson aka Marc Jacobs (left; designing for LV) and Karl Lagerfeld (designing for Chanel). at roland garros, roddick did something right

June 14, 2007

Texan Andy Roddick made such a quick cameo at the French Open — losing in the first round to Igor Andreev — that we barely had time to give him kudos for his new Lacoste cap:

It’s a newest version of the roving crocodile. The previous version of this cap had the logo on the side.

FUN BITS: This Roddick interview with The Austin American-Statesman reveals that he’s into Justin Timberlake and clarifies his (man) purse-bashing comment from last year’s Wimbledon: “To be fair about the man purse thing, I ripped on girls who have bags that are too big also. I said you can only take so much stuff to lunch.” (Does that put him in the clear? Tell us!)

EDIT: More silver lining for Andy. His brother, John Roddick, runs the tennis camp that bred this year’s boy’s French Open Champ, Uladzimir Ignatik of Belarus. (via the Florida Sun-Sentinel)

rome’s fashion highlights: davydenko and serena

May 21, 2007

Although many players were rockin’ the pink and purple this week (including Patty Schnyder and Svetlana Kuznetsova), it was Serena Williams who ran away with it, combining both colors in her Nike outfit. She even mixed it up with different accessories: a cap one day, and different colored headbands for the other two matches:

(What do you think of Serena’s ensemble? Tell us.)

Meanwhile, Russian Nikolay Davydenko continues his love affair with clothier Airness, who has showered him with variations on his current uniform. We saw four versions in three color ways just this week — red, orange, and baby blue. Which means he had more costume changes than Serena:

vincent spadea: at least he’s self-aware

May 9, 2007

Bedazzled trucker hats, basketball shorts — these are things you don’t normally seen worn during a tennis match (on the court, at least), but are staples of Vince Spadea‘s wardrobe.

Although I’m not sure if he’s trying to look crazy or doesn’t care enough to bother — the same question that goes through my mind every time I see Bud Collins — I have to say that I like approve of the logo on his caps.

spadea-hat.jpg

It’s a drawing of him wearing a trucker hat. How very meta.

Edit: Here’s a Spadea link from JNP to www.vincespadea.com (“recognized by the ATP as the Official Vince Spadea Website”). He’s selling socks and sweatbands with that same trucker logo, along with a shirt that says “SPADEA: Ain’t Afraid Of Ya”.

Jesus. Someone help him with a redesign, please? I’m sure he had a wonderful time making this website on AngelFire in 1997, but it really needs to go.
