shirtless: rafa strips down (some more) for armani

September 30, 2011

Who’s got next? With Janko Tipsarevic joining the ranks of ATP fellas who have stripped down in front of the camera, Rafael Nadal needed to get his gusto back from the Serb’s sweaty six-pack. He did just that last week as Armani began to push out its fall campaign, full of swoon-worthy shots of a barely-clad Rafa. The ATP web site has the full set of Rafa photos here.

On court: This week has been a good one for Tipsarevic, who is into the semifinals in Kuala Lumpur. Meanwhile, a hurting Novak Djokovic has pulled out of the China Open due to a bad back.

For all you fans of good legs, check out the Spanish Davis Cup team from a couple of weeks ago. No Nair needed here.

shirtless: the (liberal) men of SLC

September 28, 2011

Run, boys, run! Some good natured (and good bodied) folks in Salt Lake City, Utah, took to the streets over the weekend in protest. And in little clothing, we might add. The first ever Undie Run was held to bring attention to what organizers called the state of Utah’s “uptight laws” and nearly 3,000 joggers and walkers participated. We’re just curious: Are there really this many tight-bodied guys in SLC? Or were the photogs wearing their TSF goggles while shooting? Video of the barely-clad, politically-minded guys and gals below.

shirtless: bod by janko

September 22, 2011

Move over, Nole. And you too, Rafa… and Fernando. So Janko Tipsarevic made mention during the US Open that the reason for his recent success was that he had finally dedicated 100 percent of himself to tennis — and his body. The Serb isn’t joking around, appearing in a series of shots for the company Extreme Intimo, which makes underwear, nighties and other wear-at-home items. Janko and his total-toned bod can be seen on their Facebook page. Click the images below (or here) to visit the full gallery, which has 146 Facebook “Likes” and counting…

Oh right, and we couldn’t deprive you of the making-of vid, now could we? | TSF Vault: Shirtless

shirtless: just call them ballsy

September 13, 2011

Fore! We’re a little late on this, but the boys of the Bethany College (Kan.) golf team got ballsy this summer in doing a team photoshoot. Too bad the school’s administration didn’t like their tan lines. Oh. And the captain’s name? Jack Hiscock. No. Really.

(Thanks to Dan Savage for the tip)

ferrer, quietly, in the mix

September 6, 2011

Still in it: Spaniard David Ferrer is one of the few players left in the draw who snuck into the round of 16 of the 2011 U.S. Open without much fanfare (along with Monaco and Gilles Muller); pretty much all the other guys have either tussled with (and toppled) high-profile players or are BMOCs themselves. Ferrer, the fifth seed, will face Andy Roddick for a spot in the quarters; the winner of that match plays Nadal or Muller.

Lotto: Simple kit for Lotto‘s guys this year — nothing to write home about. (That torso, though, is a different story.) As for Lotto’s women, they’re still charging on with the same flirty kits they’ve been playing in all year. Glad to see Radwanksa in the mix to help Pironkova and Schiavone sell the brand’s designs to fans.

shirtless: janko tipsarevic

September 5, 2011

Uhm, hi: Some practice pics we found of Janko Tipsarevic from this year’s U.S. Open. Lots of other images if you follow the links. (Please do!)

Up in the air: We really didn’t know which side to root for as we watched today’s 4th round match between Janko and Juan Carlos Ferrero. On the one hand, you want the Serb to break through and get past his first-week rut at the Slams. On the other, you want to give Juanqui a last hurrah before his impending retirement.

No upset: The 20th seeded Tipsarevic prevailed after a looong match — 7-5, 6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-2 — to reach the quarterfinals, making this his career-best performance at any major. Let’s hope he’s content getting that far because his next opponent is Novak Djokovic. (Draw: See how the quarterfinals are coming together for the men.)

shirtless: nadal and kortajarena take on armani jeans

September 3, 2011

We never got around to posting images from Rafa‘s Armani Jeans Fall/Winter 2011 campaign shoot — the poster of which he made a cameo for at Macy’s right before the start of the 2011 U.S. Open — so here they are!

Spanish Armada: Nadal was photographed by Steven Klein for the ads; fellow Spaniard Jon Kortajarena, meanwhile, is the face of the collection’s catalogue. See all of JK’s looks here.

how we’ll cope with tommy haas’ retirement

September 1, 2011

Ups and downs: We’re trying to take in as much of Tommy Haas as we can, especially after the injury that’s left him iffy and cautious about how much longer he’ll play on the tour (this year).

But when Tommy packs up, we’ll turn to boxes, too — of Thomas Haas chocolate. (We prefer bold and dark, please). The sugar high isn’t quite the same as the thrill of Tommy sightings, but it’ll get pretty close.

Brackets: At this week’s U.S. Open, the veteran German beat Jonathan Dasnieres De Veigy in the first round and will face Alejandro Falla in the second. (Draw: Men’s Singles)

(And since we couldn’t back up our Farmers Classic Tommy report with a photograph, here’s exhibit A, above, snapped by Anthony Chartoff during a hitting session at this year’s U.S. Open. Check out all of Chartoff’s great pics here.)

Juan Monaco at the 2011 U.S. Open. The Argentine is still in the singles draw, beating Seppi in the first round and next playing Stepanek. They share the same section of the draw as Federer and Fish. (Draw: Men’s Singles)

we give our love to men’s doubles

July 31, 2011

And by doubles, we mean a two-for-one: shirtless AND tattooed.

Farmers Classic semifinalist Alex Bogomolov, Jr. showed TSF some love before his match-up against Ernests Gulbis yesterday. Alex was on the Grandstand court playing points with a decent-hittin’ tween. BTW: Gulbis won that match 6-2, 7-6 (4).

We already logged his right shoulder tat, and this is our first the Chinese characters on his left shoulder.

More: Two more images after the cut…

shirtless: guillermo canas

July 30, 2011

So are we the only ones seeing more and more men wear their long hair in buns these days? Kinda loving it as a summer look…

Speaking of bun (and buns) Guillermo Canas has been popping in and out of our line of sight at this week’s Farmer’s Classic, where he’s been working with semifinalist Ernests Gulbis. The lanky Latvian booked his spot in the final four with that upset of second seed Juan Martin Del Potro 6-4, 7-6 (3), making this his first semi appearance since January in Sydney. Gulbis will play Alex Bogomolov, who staged his own upset in the Grandstand court in his quarterfinal against Thomaz Bellucci.

Stacking up: See the draws here.

andy’s acting chops

June 6, 2011

Move over, Nole! When is Andy Murray making his way to Hollywood? The quiet and often awkward is plain brilliant in a hilarious new video from HEAD, in which the world’s no. 4 promotes his racket-maker with a Facebook-friendly spot. In the vid, Murray’s at home, on court, in bed and in the shower (authentically in the buff, as far as we can tell). The schtick? HEAD is pushing fans to their Facebook page, asking them to write personalized comments to Murray. Murray will choose his faves to slap on his HEAD bag for the Championships, a move that we sort of dig. Oh look there’s Andy walking onto Centre Court — wait! I WROTE THAT. You know, it could happen to you. But first, you must “Like” HEAD (and watch the vid).

To catch more of Andy’s (pretty awesome) acting, check out the vid after the jump. (more…)

kolyateral damage

May 27, 2011

Shirtless: Croatia’s Antonio Veic did his part to make a name for the qualifiers who reached the third round of this year’s French Open (the others: Leonardo Mayer, Lukasz Kubot, Lukas Rosol). In the process, Veic took down 28th seed Nikolay Davydenko 3-6, 6-2, 7-5, 3-6, 6-1. Veic next plays Nadal. (Draw: RG Men’s Singles)

More: A few more shots of Veic in (and out) of his Lotto gear, plus Kolya in his Dunlop kit. Nothing to see there, really. It’s just for my records…. See it all after the cut…

shirtless: novak djokovic

May 26, 2011

ATPer Novak has stopped tearing off his clothes (literally) after match wins — and thank god for that; otherwise we’dve had 40+ casualties (and counting!) in 2011 — but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t found other outlets for his ham.

Speaking of ham, someone get this guy some food.

no djoke: novak goes shirtless in vogue

May 19, 2011

Consider it the ultimate tennis bitch slap. Sure, Novak Djokovic is by far the hottest thing on the tennis circuit right now, but for Anna Wintour to go as far and shoot the world no. 2 for a spread on the mag’s website and a bikini shot worth two (three if you want to study hard) glances, is so … un-Federer.

Is Mirka seething? Well, we can’t quite know. But Djoko looks fantastic in the black swim trunks, seen above on the entrance of Vogue.com today and below in the image, which was taken by Norman Jean Roy. Roy has plenty of high-quality fashion accolades to his name, including Vanity Fair and Details alongside Vogue, of course. He took this well-known image of Lindsay Lohan for the cover of Vanity Fair.

So is Anna over Rog? Naw. We doubt it. But would he ever pose in a tiny black swimsuit like that? We sort of doubt. Below, another look at the bikini and after the cut, Djoko wears … clothes. The shoot took place in Miami during the Sony Ericsson Open.

shirtless: when in rome

May 16, 2011

Suddenly second best: Can you caption this better than us? We kinda dare you to… Here’s our Mollly-Shannon inspired effort: “Sometimes, when I get really nervous, I grab a towel and pretend to pinch my nipples during a change over. It helps with holding serve.”

short balls: gilt gets big and three boys make big (and different) decisions

May 11, 2011

Hockey (player) for homos: As New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo amps up his serious push for a marriage equality bill in Albany, the Human Rights Campaign scored a big win in the fight for equal rights: a major sports league male. Sean Avery of the New York Rangers is known as fashion-conscious (check out the glasses) and the 31-year-old NHL veteran isn’t shying away from being the first New York professional athlete to campaign from the cause. And this shouldn’t surprise anyone: he’s Canadian. The former Chelsea resident now lives in SoHo.

Gilty of it: One of our fave online shopping outlets, Gilt, is getting rather giant, actually. The member-based site was valued at $1 billion recently, according to a New York Times article. A new investor in the fashion-savvy site? Goldman Sachs. Guess the big boys are finally getting serious about this online shopping thing, eh? More: Venus’ EleVen on Gilt

Tattoo watch hide your eyes: We think it better to close your eyes on this one. The Utah Jazz’s Andrei Kirilenko (he’s Russian, but not related to Maria as far as we know) reveals his latest body art. And… are there any words? Nope. None at all. Just… nothing. TSF Vault: The (classier) tattoos of the tennis tours

Schockingly perfect: There really is only one word for Illinois Rep. Aaron Schock: HOT. Yep, the soon-to-be-30 Republican from the Midwest is giving you a corn-fed washboard stomach on the current cover of Men’s Health. His reasoning to go almost-shirtless on the cover of a national mag? To promote healthy living. Hey, we appreciate such things, Aaron! But we’re still waiting for Mrs. O’s abs on the cover of Shape — and that ain’t happening until January 2017 at the earliest.
Short(er) balls: While we may be a little late to the game (the event was tonight), ESPN the Mag teamed up with popular San Francisco-based Pop Up Magazine tonight on NYU’s campus in downtown Manhattan. That’s right — a live magazine. Regular This American Life-contributor Starlee Kine was going to be there, as were ESPN writers like Katie Baker and Alyssa Roenigk. The event featured artists and columnists as well, and we can’t wait to see/hear/smell/listen/touch what pieces of brilliance comes out from the evening after tonight. | In a strange story getting stranger, Nancy Kerrigan was due to testify at her brother’s trial today in the death of  her father. | And just in case you forgot about our friends at Tennishead.net, we’re loving their British-inspired tennis coverage.

stefan koubek retires

May 6, 2011

One less for Tattoo Watch to keep tabs on now that pseudo-tramp-stamped Austrian Stefan Koubek has announced his retirement.

The 34-year-old ATPer, ranked 261st, plans to finish his pro career off with an exhibition match on July 30. “I wanted to play Roland Garros and Wimbledon one more time but I won’t make it,” he told the press. “Once you’ve decided to quit, you lose your motivation.”

More: Here are pics we took of Koubek back in March. Yes, you saw that correctly: it’s a chinese character superimposed over a tribal pattern. He has his cake and eats it, too!
